Overview

BJUI is a leading voice in global urology, providing two expert-led journals – the flagship journal BJUI, one of the world’s leading urology journals, and the sound science, open access journal BJUI Compass – and accredited elearning through their BJUI Knowledge platform. Their mission is to support lifelong learning and improve patient outcomes by offering high-quality, accessible resources to urology professionals worldwide.

BrightMinded partnered with BJUI to modernise their digital presence and create a seamless, user-friendly experience for their subscribers and administrators. The project included a complete site redesign; CRM and LMS integration; and the development of a secure subscriber portal.

Introduction

BJUI transforms urology education through cutting-edge journals and their accredited eLearning platform, all developed and led by expert urologists.

The organisation’s goal is to empower lifelong learning and better patient care in their field.

BJUI’s previous platform had become outdated in terms of its design and technology behind the system. This led to a poor experience for both the subscribers and the internal team, hindering the organisation and causing inefficiencies. BrightMinded’s mission was to design and develop a new BJU International subscriber platform by building a website, CRM, and portal integrated with the association’s external LMS.

‘BrightMinded are a lovely company to work with, clear and timely, given our complicated set-up…Dan, Sarah and Bradley were an absolute delight.’

How BrightMinded’s automation helped BJUI reduce manual admin work and improve subscriber onboarding

With their legacy platform, BJUI spent considerable time manually adding and synchronising data between different systems. To solve this, we implemented a fully automated system with a CRM, CMS and subscriber portal in one platform, and data automatically synchronised to the external LMS. Now lead contacts at member associations can manage their own organisation subscriptions, removing the burden from BJUI’s internal team. The lead contacts can also enter details of new surgeons and trainees, who receive invitation emails allowing them to join the platform.

New subscribers can register, update their data, and manage their payments directly in their subscriber zone. This digital transformation project reconfigured user workflows, reduced admin workload, increased data accuracy, and freed up time for BJUI’s team to focus on growth and engagement.

How BJUI made life-saving learning resources more accessible through smart integration

To increase engagement and make resources more accessible, BJUI needed to break down data silos by combining information and material from both legacy sites into one. Some content is manually managed by the BJUI team, while some is automatically imported from their journal publisher’s website.

With CiviCRM integrated into the new platform the team can now also deliver personalised email content based on subscriber interests, track engagement, and run more effective marketing campaigns for existing, lapsed, and potential subscribers.

This all means that subscribers receive relevant resources faster and more easily, and should help improve retention by delivering valuable and timely information to those who need it most.

How we built a custom subscriber portal for BJUI using open-source tech

To meet the needs of BJUI’s internal team and their subscribers, the right technology was a combination of WordPress and CiviCRM, which are both open-source platforms.

This gave us the freedom to develop a new gated portal area, which enables users to take charge of their data through a self-service portal.

Using our deep understanding of CiviCRM, we wrote custom extensions to extend functionality including subscriber management and payment flows. One such customisation enables regional pricing, offering subscribers from LMICsa reduced subscription rate. This is based on data from the World Bank, and helps to make BJUI’s resources available to as wide an audience as possible.

We understand that every association and membership organisation is different, and our approach lets us tailor everything to BJUI’s internal and external users’ needs – delivering a scalable, user-friendly solution built for long-term growth.
